Through an analysis of First Amendment jurisprudence and dissent, the presenter will share thoughts on how institutions of higher education owe a duty to the American public to educate for dissent to protect democratic ideals. Highlighting the need for democratic education, the presenter will foreground dissent as a critical tool in educating for democracy while upholding robust First Amendment protections. The presenter will share ideas for enhanced democratic education and lead attendees in a discussion of potential inclusions on their campuses.
