Abstract
Developing the next generation of leaders has been a longstanding goal of higher education in the United States (Roberts, 2007). Today both curricular and co-curricular leadership learning occurs within our institutions (Guthrie & Jenkins, 2018). Graduates of higher education student affairs (HESA) programs often assume leadership roles in developing and training students, yet they may lack the necessary skills (Teig, 2018). A review of HESA program curriculum revealed a limited emphasis on leadership educator development (Dunn et al., 2021; Kroll & Guvendiren, 2021). This session expands on this research, examining how master’s level student affairs preparation programs cultivate ‘leadership educators’ from the perspectives of their program directors. The implications of this research align with the Leadership Learning and Pedagogy theme, encouraging participants to consider curriculum reform and support for staff and graduate assistants in developing leadership training skills.
