Abstract
Despite investing millions of dollars into initiatives, mental health concerns continue to rise on campuses nationwide. Sometimes the student experience can feel like a jungle — strange sounds, new creatures, and uncharted territories. Students will face the inevitable failures and challenges that, if not internally processed healthily and constructively, may result in their belief that they are incapable or have little potential.
In this session, participants will explore self-efficacy and its impact on students’ competency development, persistence, and mental health. The presenter will also introduce participants to one of the primary factors contributing to low levels of self-efficacy — elephant thinking. Session participants will examine their own ‘IPS’ and learn how to use cognitive reframing as a compass for aiding student leaders in healthy internal processing. As a result of this session, leadership educators will enhance their self-efficacy, and have the tools to enhance students’ self-efficacy.
