Abstract
Alcohol consumption is associated with various consequences, including academic difficulties, injuries, and substance use disorders. Despite well-documented consequences, the culture of drinking remains deeply ingrained in university settings, often facilitated by local customs/traditions. Our analysis revealed alcohol dependency was positively associated with participation in local drinking customs. The presenters will discuss strategies for investigating the role of local customs on alcohol use and how to develop appropriate interventions.
Learning Outcomes- Inform the audience about the evolving landscape surrounding alcohol use, including local customs and traditions that involve alcohol use in the college population at various universities.
- Provide evidence concerning critical programmatic gaps within campus health and alcohol initiatives that don't take into account the huge impact location customs/traditions has on alcohol use.
- Foster dialogue among audience members, academic administrators, and college health promotion officials on designing a tailored program approach to alcohol programming, taking into account the influence of alcohol cultural norms.
